Why should I join a volunteer fire or rescue department?

Over the years, Virginian have made history by answering the call to duty. This proud tradition of service is continued today by the volunteer rescue squads and fire departments which serve our area. One benefit of volunteering is the self-satisfaction knowing you are helping others. You may save lives. You may save homes. It is an opportunity to make new friends. In additional, you will receive the benefit of free training and real world experience. It may even open doors to many other career opportunities. You will also get to experience thrill and excitement - something you will not find in any other type of volunteer service!

What are the minimum qualifications to join?

Guidelines for membership are specific to each department, but in general you must meet the following minimum qualifications: * At least 16 years of age * Clean criminal record * Drug free * Safe driving record * Some agencies may have additional requirements.

How do I become a member?

Do I have to have any training to join?

No. Training necessary for you to be a firefighter or a rescue worker is generally offered FREE of charge. Some courses even grant college level credit.

How much time is required each month to be a member?

Each department has individual requirements, but generally speaking, volunteers are expected to give approximately 32 hours per month.

What type of training is available?

Rescue squad training generally begins with C.P.R., emergency vehicle operations, and Emergency Medical Technician. There are many other training opportunities available including advanced and specialized courses. There are many other training opportunities available including advanced and specialized courses.

Are there other opportunities besides patient care and fire fighting?

If patient care and fighting fire doesn't appeal to you, there are many other ways to help. Administrative support may be needed with accounting, computer skills, legal guidance, fund raising or clerical duties. A helping hand with building, grounds and vehicle upkeep is always welcome. No matter what the task, when seconds matter - your hours count.

Our volunteer departments are compromised of people from all walks of life. From Homemakers to mechanics to bankers, it's people that make the volunteer rescue squads and fire departments what they are today. It's people from all walks of life sharing the tremendous satisfaction of knowing they are truly making a difference in their community. Few other volunteer experiences offer thrill, challenge and rewards of serving a team dedicated to "Neighbor helping Neighbor!"
