Our Heroes: Firefighters


 

According to the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for firefighters is expected to increase 10-20% through 2012.  Because citizens recognize firefighting as an essential services in any community, the jobs of firefighters are typically secure.

The skills you will learn as a volunteer firefighter can help you get a full-time paid position with a fire department or a job in any indiustry where firefighters are kept on staff.  Whenever disaster strikes, volunteer firefighters spring into action to rescue their neighbors and save property.  There's no more important job than that.


 

In any weather, at any time, firefighters must respond immediately.  As they battle smoke and flames, they must put their own lives on the line.  This takes courage, technical skill, initiative, and a dedication to helping others.

To become a firefighter, you must be strong, mentally alert, self-disciplined, and have mechanical aptitude.  You need to be able to make quick decisions in emergencies.  You'll work closely wiith crew members in dangerous and stressful conditiona, so you must be dependable and get along well with others.
